‘Phillip Anderson Was A True St. Georgian’
[Updated] The Corporation of St. George extended their condolences to the family of the late Phillip Anderson, calling him a “true St. Georgian” who was passionate about tourism for the Old Town.
A spokesperson said, “The Corporation of St. George wishes to extend its sincere condolences to the family of the late Mr. Phillip Anderson.
“Mr. Phillip Anderson began his Corporation of St. George service in May 2012. He served as Councilor for the past six years, and during the past three and half years he was the Chairman of the Infrastructure & Development Committee.
“He was instrumental in ensuring King’s Square has free Wi-Fi for all who visit and was actively working with the stakeholders for the Waste Water Management for the parish of St. George’s. He had a passion for tourism and was quite passionate of the tourism product for the Old Town.

“Councilor Anderson was well known in the Town of St. George and Bermuda as a whole, as he operated the Visitor’s Information Centre [VIC] in the Old Town for the past six years. He was truly a historian and wanted to assist in educating anyone who came in the doors of the VIC.
“He enjoyed telling the stories of the early settlers here in St. George and wanted all to be aware of the history of our Old Town. He was often seen doing walking tours in the Town and more recently, he was conducting water tours on his boat.
“Councilor Anderson was described as a lively character in the Town, and he ensured that all knew of his passion for tourism for the Old Town. Councilor Anderson was more than a colleague, but a friend to many of us here in the Town of St. George, and he will be sorely missed.
“On behalf of the members and staff of the Corporation of St. George and the community of St. George, we extend to his two children, three grandchildren, his mom, siblings and family our heartfelt condolences as we have lost not just a Councilor colleague, but a true St. Georgian who fought to the end for his Town. The flag on King’s Square will be lowered to half-mast on the day of his funeral.”
Update 12.49pm: Bermuda Tourism Authority CEO Kevin Dallas said, “On behalf of the Bermuda Tourism industry, we offer our condolences to the family and friends of Phillip ‘Phoopa’ Anderson.
“Phoopa was known to many as the face of the Visitor Information Centre in the St. George Town Square, but what he meant to tourism was so much larger.
“His love for Bermuda – particularly the east end – glowed brightly every single day, passionately and relentlessly. That’s what we will miss most of all.
“Tourism stakeholders all over the island will be saddened by this news, but we trust Phoopa’s passion for Bermuda lives on inside each of us and the things we do to make this island a truly inviting and memorable place.”
Update 2.51pm: Minister of Tourism and Transport Zane DeSilva said, “I wish to extend my deepest and most sincere condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Phillip Anderson.
“As an ambassador for tourism, Mr. Anderson leaves behind a great legacy of service and leadership in the town of St. George’s and, the entire island. His passing is a loss to the people of Bermuda.”
